was Thomas so sick that was thought to send him to an asylum ??

Why would they send him to asylum? He wasn't admitted for mental issues.

I think it means that Thomas' condition might've been very bad that if he didn't rest for a certain period of time he would most likely go crazy. When you're tired, sleepless and sick, it destroys your mind completely.
