"Hot child in the city"
Quote from Milena Araújo Barbosa on 05/11/2024, 02:54Hot child in the City is a song by singer Nick Gilder. In his own words, the song refers to child prostitution in Los Angeles.
"I've seen a lot of young girls, 15 and 16, walking down Hollywood Boulevard with their pimps. Their home environment drove them to distraction so they ran away, only to be trapped by something even worse. It hurts to see that so I tried writing from the perspective of a lecher - in the guise of an innocent pop song."
Suspicious, right?

Guess who that angel and hot child might be.

Down and out in Paris city
All the things are tough and pretty
Stay with me until the night is gone

Quote from Milena Araújo Barbosa on 05/11/2024, 14:26Maybe something to do with him remembering the moments he had with Thomas while walking around Paris on that 1985 trip?

Quote from Efim Fedorov on 07/11/2024, 19:39Wow. I thought Dieter only began to write dissolute lyrics like that in the Blue System era. Turns out it started much earlier...
"Princess of the night" also sounds suspicious. I think it might refer to a child prostitute. To make a long story short:
- The same euphemism, "prince for a night", was initially planned to be used in a song about the American serial killer Pogo the Clown. It was produced by Bohlen's no. 1 rival Michael Cretu and released just months prior to In The Middle Of Nowhere. "Prince for a night" there referred to a little boy who was kidnapped, molested and murdered by Pogo. That euphemism was eventually excluded from the final version, but the original lyrics could have still be found in the booklets.
- Sex workers are generally associated with the nighttime. Slang terms for a prostitute include "creature of the night", "lady of the night", "woman of the night" etc.
- "Prince" or "princess" refers to someone young, maybe even underage. A mature person would rather be a "queen" of the night, not a "princess".
PS: Nick Gilder's vocals reminded me on Dieter for some reason 😀
